Monastic Meal with 4 Bowls

The word “Baru” is translated as “bowls which only fills a humble food”. It refers to the moderate eating style that a Buddhist monk must observe. A monk’s diet also strictly prohibits the consumption of animals, which considers as sentient beings. Following these precepts is said to refresh one’s mind, and allow for greater appreciation of the environment through physical, psychological and spiritual enlightebment. Barugongyang is a unique and special way of eating in Korean temples. At this communal meal practice the meal is eaten in total silence, and not a single grain of rice is wasted.
